Realtor's Call To Action Critical For Stopping Government Intrusions

Broker IPTV:  We’re talking today with Greg Zadel, President of the Colorado Association of Realtors. Greg, thank you for being with us. Your convention was not too long ago down in Colorado Springs down at the Broadmoor, I went down it was fantastic.

BrokerIPTV  :You are working on a program called "Call to Action", can you explain that?

Greg Zadel: Sure, Call to Action is a program not only at the state level but at the national level and that really brings a grass roots participation of realtors into the legislative arena. So when an issue comes up at the state legislature or the congress at the national level realtors can be informed about that and have the ability to make their feelings known about a particular issue.

Broker IPTV:  How many realtors are participating in this do you have an idea?

Greg Zadel:  Well right now there with total participation across the country it’s probably about a third of the brokers or realtors that participate at different levels.

Broker IPTV:  I am a realtor.  What is the benefit for me for getting involved in the call to action?

Greg Zadel:  The benefit is that it gives you a voice in the system.  Our organization, the politics is probably one of the major things we have to deal as a realtor association it's really protecting personal property rights is the biggest part of it. It’s not so much our own dealings as a broker but really property rights.

Broker IPTV: My guess that the discussion came up about mortgage reform at some point?

Greg Zadel:  Absolutely, we had a call to action just a few days ago on the bill for FHA to enhance what FHA does at a national level.  So as a realtor you get an e-mail saying if you want to participate on this call to action you click on a link and once you click on that link it goes to a page that already knows who you are so it knows who the senators are in your area or congressman are in your area and then there is a sample letter that you can either send that you can edit that you can make a phone call it gives you all the information if you want to it is not a mandatory system

Broker IPTV:  I guess the association is in favor of some FHA reform?

Greg Zadel:  Yes.

Broker IPTV:  And on that President Bush comes out yesterday and talked about a real big initiative with secretary Paulson to go forward and make some type of attempt to help out all of those people in sub prime who are being foreclosed on and maybe freezing  rates do you have an opinion on a program like that? 

Greg Zadel:  You know those are hard to give an exact answer on until you can see the details, because on the surface there maybe things that sound really good or maybe some people have concerns about it but any legislation but I don't think this is legislation its more of an agreement but with anything like that really you have to see what the details are. 

BrokerIPTV:  What is the big pending issue that a Colorado realtor should know about be involved in right now? 

Greg Zadel: Boy its tough to pick one right now mortgage reform is a big thing at the state level we are also seeing stuff about issues regarding 1031 exchanges we have been active in that both at the state and national level there is just a property rights issue. Obviously we are going to have a legislative session here in another month or so there are bound to be a lot of issues affecting property rights.
