There is a reason we have contracts. They seem to more important then ever these days. The times of the hand shake seems to have gone the way of the dodo. People these days are sue happy, and you dont want to get caught in their web or give them a reason. Some people sue simply because they see an opportunity and if you dont pay attention to your contracts you may very well be the one who gives them that opportunity. Today, detailed contracts are important for many reasons, but one important reason that affects you is protection.

The main reasons contracts are important is for understanding, to make sure that everyone understands all the circumstances surrounding the deal. Its just a good practice to make sure you and the others involved understand every aspect of the business arrangement. The former reason has become paramount these days due to people suing each other as if it were some national past time.

When it comes to the small details of anything, some of us just dont care, or were not detail people, so we tend to overlook some of the smaller, but equally important issues in the contract. Always try to remember that its the small details that can get people into trouble. So the point is, dont skimp on your contracts, pay attention to all the details, big and small. Dont listen to your buddy telling you not to worry about some little detail. It wont be him being cross examined by apposing counsel.
