| Green Building Goes Mainstream |
|
Green buildings and style are in demand. As this trend continues to grow, the Earth Advantage Institute has identified the Top 10 Green Trends for 2010:
- The Smart Grid and Connecting Home. This technology shows energy useage in real-time so users can identify better ways to conserve.
- Energy Labeling. The energy star program and other forms of labeling help consumers know which products are the most efficient and cost-effective.
- BIM Software. Building Information Modeling is in use for larger projects, like commercial buildings, to design and manage the systems of buildings to make them efficient.
- "Buy-in to Green by Financial Community." Lenders and insurers are finally getting to know the green consumer more, and thus able to meet their demands, as well as see the boost in their own bottom line by going green.
- The End of McMansions. Homeowners are finally realizing bigger isn't necessarily better.
- The Rising Popularity of Eco-Districts. Neighborhoods with higher walkability (closeby restaurants, shopping, arts and entertainment), neighborhood gardens, efficient living communities and green spaces are becoming in-demand.
- Water Conservation. Energy star products, low-flush toilets and high-efficiency showerheads can save change on a daily basis that can really add up.
- Carbon Calculation. Did you know you can calculate your own carbon footprint? By doing so, you can discover ways to cut back on your long-term impact on the environment.
- Net Zero Buildings. These are buildings that produce less energy than they take in, cutting greenhouse emissions.
- Sustainable Building Education. The more builders know about green technologies, the more impact there will be on a global scale.
