According to U.S. Census statistics, 19
million American households pack up and move each year, says an article on
MintLife.com. In 2010, Worldwide ERC, the Worldwide Relocation Association,
reported the average professional
household move cost $12,230.
What are the Major Cost Factors for
Moving?
1. How Far and How Much?
A professional moving company bases their services on distance and the size
of the household and, if you are travelling inter-state, the weight of the
load. Obviously the farther the move, the bigger the expense.
"The weight of your items is actually measured on a scale." says the
article. "Before the move, the empty
truck is weighed and the truck will be weighed again once it is loaded with
your items." They should provide you with an "empty weight" receipt when you
begin.
2. Include Everything!
The moving company will give you a fair estimate based off of the
information you give them. If you "forget"
to include the contents in the garage, your estimate will not be accurate. It's
best to ask the company to send someone out to give an estimate in person. Most reputable companies will insist on this
anyway.
3. Additional Costs:
Be aware of
any additional costs such as:
-
Disassembling and reassembling items or disconnecting gas pipes, etc.
-
Moving heavy items such as pianos, boats, autos,
riding lawnmowers, etc.
-
Unusual access charges such as having to use
stairs, elevators or having to park far away.
-
Additional insurance costs
Ask your moving company representative what additional costs they foresee
and if there is any way to avoid them.
Do It Yourself
Obviously, the least expensive way to move (especially if it's in-town) is to pack it and move it
yourself with the help of a few friends.
Make sure you include dinner at the end of the day and make it a party!
"Also remember to factor in your personal
travel and accommodations, on-the-go meals, the cost of new vehicle
registration and driver's license, utility hook-ups, and carpet and drapery
installation." suggests the article.
