Powerful Sales Tips from the Pros

Torley visits the Apple Store 08It's tough to be in sales.  To be successful, you have to put yourself "out there" every day  finding that balance between meeting the needs of your client and doing what's best for your company.

Colorado Business Magazine compiled a list of Colorado's 10 Most Powerful Salespeople and their secrets of success.  The most common advice is to build relationships in order to build business.

So how can you be more successful in 2012? Focus on these key ingredients of a successful business.

1.       Integrity.  "it's really important to be upfront and have integrity in everything you say and do - professionally and personally," says Jessica Kalee Schoeppler, co-founder of a cleaning business in Boulder.    "People want to know who they're talking with; they want to know they're going to get a quick response to any questions or concerns they have."

2.      Listen.  "Making your customer happy is not a short term objective." states Tyler Smith from Otterbox.  Make sure you listen carefully to what your client needs and then be the one to offer the solutions.

3.      Relationships Matter:  "I think people forget how critical the post-sale relationship is," says Daniel Hurley, a software executive.. "Everybody is so focused on getting that sale, but a lot of people don't necessarily stay involved with the customer to (make) sure they're getting everything out of (the sale)." Not following through can cost you future leads.

Aron Adler who sells office supplies and technology in Golden agrees. "Be willing to go to the ends of the Earth for your customer, and give them a level of service they couldn't get anywhere else." says Adler. "That's the key to keeping the customer, and repeat customers are so important when the economy is down."

4.      Work Efficiently:   "You don't have to work 60 or 80 hours a week to be successful." offers Kris Swanson, a business development manager.  She balances work with community service and family time.

5.      Be Flexible:  Make sure you are changing with the market, says Blaine Stern, who is in the sportswear industry.  You have to tweak your services to reflect what the customer needs.

6.      Network:  Use everything in your arsenal to keep in touch with potential clients.   Keep in touch through social media, community and business events.  Build your business by building relationships.

7.      "Ditch the Sales Pitch" says Joshua Homberg VP of sales at BroadSoft, Inc.  Instead he suggests you focus on building trust and relationships.

8.      Lead the Way.  ""A powerful salesperson must be a great leader. A great leader is always positive and persistent." Says Nathan Hildreth, formerly of SimplyPure. "Regardless of the economy, the greatest difference between a successful and an unsuccessful person is that the former is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve a goal."

9.      Get Back to the Basics:  Focus on service and quick response, says Mark Copelin of OfficeScapes.  "The tough times make or break you, and to persevere and come through it is very exciting."

A successful business puts the customer first.  Use these simple tips from Colorado's Most Powerful Salespeople.
