A blog (a portmanteau of web log) is a website where entries are commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.
Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (artlog), photographs (photoblog), sketchblog, videos (vlog), music (MP3 blog), audio (podcasting) are part of a wider network of social media. Micro-blogging is another type of blogging which consists of blogs with very short posts.
As of December 2007, blog search engine Technorati was tracking more than 112 million blogs.[1

Charlie Nicks-What Real Estate Agents can do to help their business

Charlie Nicks, creative director for Tomlin-Nicks-Wells and Townsend Advertising give advice to real estate agents on how to help their business.

BrokerIPTV: Today we are talking with Charlie Nicks from Tomlin/Nicks/Wells and Townsend Advertising. He is the Creative Director. Charlie, welcome to the show.

Charlie Nicks: Thanks for having me today.

BrokerIPTV: Our first segment, we talked a little bit about what your company does and you mentioned that you work with brokers. How do you work with them?

Charlie Nicks: Well, we will contact and right now it has been mostly the larger companies, just because, what we are doing now, we have to be in a large market to do it. Whereas a lot of our clientele in the past was in towns of, you know a third of them in towns of 50,000 or less, so, this has been kind of a change [inaudible], but if their needs are recruiting and that seem to be a big thing right now. We are introduced in this recruiting website concept and then helping them with that. There are some pricing issues that are going on inside a lot of these companies, settling down to a specific menu of prices that they offer, so there is some consistency throughout their troops and I think right now attitude is a big thing. We tried to, you know as corny as that is, if that's not right, the rest of it is not going to work, so.

BrokerIPTV: And saying, "Okay, Charlie. What am I doing wrong?"

Charlie Nicks: Right now I hear that all the time and I don't believe that most of them are doing anything wrong. I think they were, you as an agent were handed a big bunch of problems that just for once, we weren't involved in any way, shape, or form in creating. I think the mortgage people really hurt us. That got handed to these agencies. The agencies are working hard. The best ones are still in the business working harder then ever and I used to, if you have ever read my stuff, I criticize agents left and right. I haven't in a couple of years, because I just think this got handed to them. So, I don't think they are doing anything wrong. I think it's more of getting focused on what's right and so..,

BrokerIPTV: All right. Well, let's talk about that, because on your website, you mention 10 things agents should do right now to help their business. Can give me a few of them?

Charlie Nicks: Five out of the ten are attitudinal issues and about staying up and keeping CNN turned down and keeping the family up and just basic things to keep yourself. It is like I was commenting a minute ago about how we were great shape here. I think just a little bit of exercise right now can help you out. I think you have to keep your head right to be right in real estate and the more you keep your family right, the more you are going to keep you business right, and vice versa and all that. So, it is the time to be simple and it is the time to be directly focused on what it is that you are trying to get done.

BrokerIPTV: Your thoughts on blogging?

Charlie Nicks: Hated it two years ago. When I started blogging, I loved it. I just [inaudible] everyday, one thing or another and I turn on to that like a lot of older people. I am 54. I get introduced from the young people. I had a [inaudible] agent in California, [inaudible] nice, great gal, bought a website from us, would not give me her buy unless I went on FaceBook and got it off there. So, that forced me to have to get a Face, do the whole thing, and then it was great. You know, I loved it. I am telling you the future, I am happy about everything that is going on in America with the young people. The older people tend to shout at the young people, but the young people in our society have it together and they are going to make things work, just work, so.

BrokerIPTV: So does that mean we have an optimistic market forecast?

Charlie Nicks: Hugely optimistic. People have to have a cave[phonetic]. I think we are going to be in this for a while. I don't think, I think it's really important as a everyday agent, someone has this, you remember that when you get one turned down. It wasn't your fault. It was some scoundrel in the mortgage business years ago and let's don't get our heads back in that. Let's do this business right and clean. When someone is getting their [inaudible], let them speak up. Let's just help people and everything is going to fine, so.

Rudy Bachraty of Trulia at Bloodhound Blog Unchained on widgets, voices, blogs

Rudy Bachraty of Trulia Bloodhound Blog Unchained on using widgets, Trulia Voices and other techniques to get your name out on the web

BrokerIPTV: Greeting viewers and welcome to BloodHoundBlog's Unchained sponsored by Zillow.com. We are at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona at the social media real estate event of the year. I am here with Rudy from Trulia. Welcome Rudy.

Rudy: Thanks for having me.

BrokerIPTV: Hey, it has been great talking to you. I have seen you in there. You were just chatting here on some of the cool tools that Trulia has like some of your widgets.

Rudy: Yeah, yeah. Yeah Trulia has a lot of great tools for agents whether it is our widgets that they can add on their blog or their websites, the key is if it adds values to your site, use it; if it doesn't, don't.

BrokerIPTV: Tell me about one or two of the widgets that Trulia has.

Rudy: Trulia map widget - basically, if you have listings, you can put that widget on your blog, so if someone finds you through the search engine on your blog, now they can have a visual of your listings and they click on it and they will go right into your listings. So, it adds more engagement to your blog.

BrokerIPTV: Excellent. Trulia Voices. We were talking about that. I mean looks that has been phenomenally successful for people.

Rudy: Yeah, it has been fantastic. The buyers are there, the sellers are there, the agents are there; so, there is a lot of great communication going on and that is what you want. You really want to be where those consumers are and if you don't have the time to blog, Voices is a fantastic alternative to blogging or even a supplement. You can pick out the questions that you want to answer, that you are expert in, and then you can help that consumer and over time, as you answer more of these questions, the consumer can look at your profile because your answers are put together like a repository, right? So, they will see all of your answers and they can kind of engage in you know what, is this agent someone that I want to work with?

BrokerIPTV: Right. It is kind of like what Greg and Brian were talking about as far as going around like a dog, peeing on trees, right? You can leave your name, you can leave your web address, and give good information for people to link back to you.

Rudy: Yeah, I mean the key is if you are an agent and there are lot of sites out there Facebook, Linkedin, Trulia to name a few, you should be on as many as you can, because you never know where a consumer will be, so that is the key.

BrokerIPTV: And being where buyers are, how many uniques a month is Trulia getting right now.

Rudy: We are getting about six million at the last time I checked, but I am sure that number is rising. It has been rising ever since I have come onboard.

BrokerIPTV: And how does that compete with say Zillow and Realtor.com.

Rudy: Realtor.com is according to comScore number one, we are number seven on comScore and Zillow is not in the top ten.

BrokerIPTV: Zillow is not in the top ten?

Rudy: No, not according to comScore.

BrokerIPTV: Wow. Well, congratulations. Truly, I didn't even know that so...

Rudy: Last I checked yeah, I mean, I don't think they were in the top 10.

BrokerIPTV: Great. Well, Rudy had some great information. Appreciate you being here at the Unchained event and we are looking forward to seeing you at the next event.

Rudy: Yep. Thank you.
