The Apple iPad has the market cornered on mobile computing
devices but at the International Computer and Electronics Show held in Las Vegas in early January, the
tablet was showcased by many other firms and is finally showing mass market appeal.
The global success of the Apple iPad is bringing other
manufacturers into this quickly growing market. Over 80 tablets were announced
as coming to the market in 2011 and many were displayed at the CES conference.
What will the differences be from the Apple iPad? "With competition heating up, each and
every aspect of differentiation will be on the table Operating System, screen size, color,
and available applications. As a product matures, aspects like screen size
consolidate." said Shawn Dubravac, Chief Economist and Director of
Research, Consumer Electronics Association, in his blog 2011 CES Trends to Watch.
2010 was the year of the eReaders and 2011 will be the year
of the tablet. Research done by CES shows that consumers who own a tablet, view
it as an essential portable device, much like the smart phone.
By the end of 2011, smart phone users will be in the
majority and by 2013 more people will use smart phones and tablets than
personal computers or laptops. "Tuesday's
long-awaited announcement that Apple's iPhone will be available on Verizon,
rather than being solely restricted to AT&T, is likely to encourage further
smart phone adoption." said Andrea V. Brambila, Inman News.
