Resolve to Reflect on Your Business in 2011

Your most important business resolution for 2011 should be to take 5 minutes at the end of the day to reflect on everything that happened, the successes and the failures, and learn from them.

TimeSometimes we get so caught up in the business of doing business that we dont take time to reflect on what went well and what didnt work at the end of the day.

At the end of every day, resolve to take a few minutes to look back at what you accomplished, how your meetings went, and conversations you had, then set a goal for what you want to happen next.

Peter Bregman, the CEO of a global management consulting firm, suggests that you ask yourself these questions:

  • How did the day go? What success did I experience? What challenges did I endure?
  • What did I learn today? About myself? About others? What do I plan to do -- differently or the same -- tomorrow?
  • Who did I interact with? Anyone I need to update? Thank? Ask a question? Share feedback?

Another great strategy is to keep a running list of everything that you want or need to do.

Tony Schwartz, President and CEO of The Energy Project states, "The more fully and frequently you download what's on your mind, the less energy you'll squander in fruitless thinking about undone tasks, and the more energy you'll have to be fully present in whatever you're doing." We cant continue working at top speed without re-energizing and reflecting on our lives and our work.
