Life is risky enough without putting ourselves in harms way. Women in particular are at a higher risk than their male counterparts. When showing a house, female real estate agents should think safety first, selling a house second. There are some basic safety measures everyone should follow in every aspect of their lives, especially when they could potentially be in a sticky situation.
The one big piece of advice is to trust your instincts. If you feel uneasy about a situation, listen to your gut and dont go through with it, or make other arrangements. Nothing is worth you compromising your own safety, nothing.
This was the case with real estate agent, Lindsay Ashcroft, an associate with RE/MAX Properties. She was hours away from meeting a client when she felt uncertain about the mans story. She consulted her mother about her feelings and the inconsistencies in the mans background; they both looked him up on the internet and find out that he was a sex offender out on a reduced sentence. He was setting her up for foul play.
We live in a world of independent people and independent women, and were all for it, but there are also some realities we need to be aware of too. One reality is that there are people out there with malicious intent, who prey on unsuspecting people. Real estate agents are sometimes alone with clients in houses off the beaten path. Dont become a statistic, make sure people know where you are, and make sure you have someone with you.
Maybe you could meet the potential client before you show him a house and make sure your office has a copy of his identification. Just be aware of your surroundings at all times. Keep it safe everybody.
