There are many people who make a career switch to real estate. To some, its an alluring lifestyle. There are those who jump into real estate right out of college, however, there are others who have been in another field for many years and then later decide to become a real estate agent. This can be a great switch for some and create problems for others. If you were in a sales career odds are good you will have no problem adjusting to the new life, but if you were never even close to sales or never had any sales training you might need some more time and training to make the transition.
We need to remember that real estate professionals have no regular pay, they have no benefits, they have no draws, and no unemployment check to depend on when times are tough. Its a living thats dependant on prospecting, making cold calls, and getting referrals. To someone with engineering, accounting, or teaching backgrounds this may be a whole new experience.
The main problem, as many in the industry see it, is there is no standardized training for real estate agents, no sales training. As commissioned sales professionals, there needs to be some training on prospecting, sales scripts, and customer relations. If your association or company does not provide this training, seek it out yourself. Its important to know your field, and your field is not simply real estate, its sales and people too.
