Etiquette has been a part of our culture for centuries; it gained popularity and refinement during the renaissance period between the 14th and 17th century. Etiquette has changed along with the times and cultures. Every step we take forward in technology and social understanding, etiquette changes right along with us. We develop etiquette for every activity and event we come up with. As with other social settings, social media requires etiquette too, and the manners associated with this activity are still in the development stage.
However, there some simple things we should keep in mind, especially for real estate agents and others using social media to attract and communicate with customers. One such thing would be the old fashioned axiom, "if you dont have anything nice to say about someone then dont say anything." Always keep in mind that this is an open forum and posting negative comments about a friend, client, or activity, such as an open house will reflect poorly on you and how you conduct yourself.
Traditional social boundaries have changed a great deal these days. It used to be frowned upon to socialize with co-workers, especially supervisors. These days you can be friends with everyone on Facebook and other social networks. It may not be politically correct to say, but we do get judged by our behavior, people are always watching us and making judgments as whether or not to associate or do business with us. Always keep in mind the balance between professional and personal relationships, even if the boundaries seem a bit blurred they still exist.
