Although there have been major setbacks in the housing market, there is always a silver lining around the real estate market and around most negative issues. As the FTSE NAREIT Equity REIT index reported negative returns of 3.05 percent as compared to the S&P and Dow Jones industrials had losses of 12.5 percent and 10.6 percent, respectively.

Of course we are still experiencing losses from total returns, as measured by the FTSE NAREIT Equity REIT index, but it is not as much of a loss as other markets. We are still holding on with hopes of a recovering housing market.

We also have very low interest rates and a government intent on fixing or at least helping the real estate market recover. They have issued policies such as low mortgage rates, tax credits, increasing FHA lending and government sponsored slowdown in distressed liquidations, all aimed at helping a failing market.
